Definition:
A hyperlink is an underlined element of a web page that, when clicked, will take you to another place in that document or page, or to an entirely new page. Hyperlinks are the essence of what makes the Internet so simple to navigate.

Creating a text link:
The following instructions detail 2 ways of creating a text link depending on which method you’ve used to create your web page. In the examples, the words “Charles River Apparel” will be linked to the web page located at http://www.charlesriverapparel.com.

If you have used a publishing program to create your web page (e.g., Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Word, Macromedia DreamWeaver):

  1. In the place where you want the link to appear, type: Charles River Apparel
  2. Highlight that text, then use your program’s hyperlink feature. (This varies depending on the program; usually there is a hyperlink icon to click. If you’re not familiar with this feature, consult your program’s help manual.
  3. You will be prompted to enter the link’s web address; type: http://www.charlesriverapparel.com
  4. Link will now be highlighted (usually in blue) and you are done.
If you have created your page using HTML coding (or if you can access the HTML coding in your publishing program):
  1. In the code of the HTML page you want to link from, locate the place where you want the link to appear.
  2. Begin the link by typing: <a href="http://www.charlesriverapparel.com/">
  3. Type the words you want to appear as the link (in this example we’ll use “Charles River Apparel”): Charles River Apparel
  4. Close the link by typing: </a> The link will now be highlighted (usually in blue) and you are done. The entire link in the HTML code looks like: <a href="http://www.charlesriverapparel.com/">Charles River Apparel</a> Keep in mind that whatever you type between <a href="http://www. charlesriverapparel.com/"> and </a> is underlined and is part of the link.
